Medel joins Bologna from Besiktas

Bologna have announced the signing of Chile international Gary Medel, who joins the club from Besiktas.

The midfielder secures a return to Serie A two years after he ended a spell with Inter to move to Turkey.

Medel trained for the first time with Bologna on Thursday, with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic taking the session despite his ongoing treatment for leukaemia.

He goes straight into the Bologna squad for Friday s home game with SPAL after the club announced his signing with an amusing social media video referencing his Pitbull nickname.

Rose confirmed as next Gladbach head coach

Borussia Monchengladbach have announced Marco Rose will be the club s next head coach from the start of the 2019-20 season.

It was confirmed last week that current boss Dieter Hecking, who has been in charge at Borussia-Park since December 2016, would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

And his place in the dugout will be filled by Rose, who has been in charge of Red Bull Salzburg since 2017.

Marco Rose has done an outstanding job at Salzburg over the last six years and we are delighted that he is joining us next season, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl said in a statement on the club s official website.

Rose, 42, was a defender during his playing days, starting his career with hometown club VfB Leipzig before having spells with Hannover an…

We must make Ronaldo less exceptional, says Morocco boss Renard

Morocco boss Herve Renard has promised his side will do their best to make Cristiano Ronaldo less exceptional when they face Portugal in the World Cup on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the tournament in his side s opening 3-3 draw with Spain, drawing level with Ferenc Puskas as Europe s most prolific international goalscorer on 84 in the process.

Renard s side head into Wednesday s match in Moscow in need of a positive result, having been beaten 1-0 by Iran in their opening Group B match, but Renard accepts stopping Ronaldo could prove an impossible task.

All I can say is that he s an exceptional player. That word may not even be enough, he told a news conference.

We must do everything to make it a less excep…

Benitez moved to China for money, says Newcastle managing director

Rafael Benitez moved to China  for money despite Newcastle United going above and beyond to retain his services, according to the club s managing director.

Lee Charnley, who has held his position since April 2014, described Benitez s motivations as clear after the Spaniard left St James Park following the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

The popular former Liverpool boss took charge at Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang the day after claiming those at the top did not share his vision for Newcastle.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley accused Benitez of making unrealistic wage demands and went on to name ex-Sunderland manager Steve Bruce as his replacement, an appointment met with a degree of dissatisfaction on Tyneside.

Three is (not) the magic number: Beleaguered Klopp on worst home run in 10 years

Three is, supposedly, the magic number but try telling that to the beleaguered Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool were on Saturday unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage by Championship side Wolves, who secured a shock 2-1 win at Anfield.

It marked the end of a miserable week for the Reds, who fell to a surprise 3-2 defeat to lowly Swansea City in the Premier League last weekend before also being beaten 1-0 by Southampton on Wednesday to crash out of the EFL Cup.

For Klopp, the run of three consecutive home defeats marks his worst run as a manager in 10 years when he was in charge of Bundesliga side Mainz, who lost to Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke and Hannover between March 31 and April 28, 2007.

Postecoglou: Tottenham targeting striker in transfer window

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham are targeting a striker in the transfer window, as long as they fit his style of play.

Harry Kane left Spurs last August, and the club have failed to sign a senior striker to replace him since his departure.

Their main attacking options in his absence were Richarlison and Son Heung-min, who finished the campaign as their highest scorer with 17 goals.

Overall, Spurs managed 74 goals in the Premier League last season, with Richarlison the only other player to reach double figures after netting 11 times.

In the January transfer window, Spurs signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, though he only found the back of the net twice, playing the majority of his minutes on the left wing.

With those struggles…

De Gea set for new Manchester United deal

David De Gea is set to sign a new £200,000-per-week deal with Manchester United, according to the Mirror.

For yet another transfer window the Spain international’s future was in question though he looks set to remain at Old Trafford, not least after long term admirers Real Madrid secured the services of Thibaut Courtois.

With the transfer record for a goalkeeper being broken twice this summer, De Gea’s valuation has shot up though his manager has declined to but a figure on his head.

The twenty-seven-year-old moved to Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has since racked up three hundred and seventeen appearances in all competitions while he has won the Premier League, the EFL Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

Sahin joins Werder Bremen after Dortmund cancel contract

Nuri Sahin has joined Werder Bremen after Borussia Dortmund agreed to cancel his contract, which had one year remaining.

The 29-year-old has signed what is believed to be a two-year deal with Florian Kohfeldt s side, where he will wear the number 17 shirt.

The talks with the owners and the coach were very good, he told the club s official website.  Werder are a big club, where you have the feeling something is growing. I m looking forward to being part of it.

Kohfeldt said: I don t think there s much more to say about the qualities of Nuri. He has experienced almost everything in the Bundesliga, been a champion and cup-winner with Dortmund and played for Real Madrid and Liverpool.

He has the potential to improve us further and gives us more options. …

Former Bayern and Monaco coach Kovac appointed by Wolfsburg

Robert Kovac has been appointed as Wolfsburg s new head coach following a topsy-turvy season for the Bundesliga side.

Wolfsburg began the 2021-22 campaign with Marc van Bommel at the helm, but he was dismissed in October after a promising start tailed off dramatically.

Successor Florian Kohfeldt inspired a brief upturn in form, only for a nine-match winless run to see the team fall from the European places in November to a potential relegation battle in January.

Kohfeldt remained at the helm as Wolfsburg recovered to secure a mid-table finish, although he was sacked following the final-day draw with champions Bayern Munich.

Next, Wolfsburg have turned to Kovac, who was last in work at Monaco in Ligue 1.

He has signed a three-year contract and will…

Lauren James strike gives England victory to close in on knockout stages

Lauren James’ maiden World Cup goal was enough for England to maintain their 100 per cent record in Group D with a 1-0 victory over Denmark at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Chelsea forward struck the sixth-minute opener, but England suffered a major blow after 38 minutes when midfielder Keira Walsh was stretchered off with an apparent knee injury and later appeared on the touchline using crutches.

James’ goal was England’s first from open play since April’s Finalissima at Wembley, while Denmark came within inches of a last-gasp leveller when Amalie Vangsgaard’s header clipped the post.

England now have to wait for the result of China and Haiti in the late kick-off to learn if they have advanced to the knockouts with a match to spare.
